First April Post, reply to Sim

Dear Sim,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

First, re the Doomsday Clock, the choice of this was rather arbitrary, and is easily misinterpreted as relentlessly ticking away in one direction, towards the midnight of doom, while, in reality it has gone backwards a number of times, in response to an easing of tensions around the World, and a graduated stick, attached to a wall and divided, say from 0 to 100 1 centimeter divisions and fitted with a sliding pointer would serve just as well, given that the thing being indicated, that is the likelihood that we will blow our civilisation to bits, is entirely subject to human behaviour, not the cosmic laws of time. And if we behaved ourselves as well as we are capable of, the pointer would remain at, or near, 0. Having said that, there’s no denying that a clock presents a more striking image! I don’t think the Doomsday Clock looms large in the minds of the young, but in cases where it does, parents and educators have a duty to guide them through their early years, and be alert to unusual behaviour, talk to them about it, you might find, and be able to correct, any false fears they might have, and help them cope with the real ones.

If world leaders don’t recognise the threat, they shouldn’t be leaders, I say. Actually, at least some of them do recognise it, why else would they bother with those elaborate and expensive shelters I mentioned a while back? Because it’s in our interest for them to survive, perhaps – Oh yeah! Even when they’re not in their caves, It’s a bit hard to get their attention! That’s a good reason for us to try and make this blog a success – It would be like us being able to send a vote to them, all the time. Losing sleep over this is not going to help anyone, and I’m not asking for that to happen. Quite the opposite, the first step to solving a problem is to recognise that there is one, the next step is to try and find a way to solve it.

So what I am asking won’t take much time or effort, and none of your money or rob you of any sleep. If the idea catches on, it will be because enough people like you give it a go, and knowing that we have done something, however small, should result in a better night’s sleep, I would think. So sweet dreams tonight, my old mate, and may what you have done in spreading the message be for the best.
